New Angle and Website for Anglers in B.C.

April 7, 2008, Victoria B.C - Today the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, the provincial government and a coalition of sport fishing groups unveiled a bold new campaign to promote sport fishing in British Columbia and encourage residents and visitors to take advantage of the province's world-class fresh and saltwater fishing opportunities this summer.

"British Columbians often take for granted that they have easy access to some of the best fishing in the world" said Environment Minister Barry Penner. "This new campaign will help remind them that there are hundreds of incredible fishing adventures, literally, in their own backyard."

The new "Discover Fishing BC" campaign will use print and radio advertising, a new website and promotional contests to profile the range of fishing experiences available across the province. The campaign features the many resources available for the beginner and occasional angler including an e-licensing feature that makes it even easier to head out with reel and rod.

With a fresh new logo "Discover Fishing BC" and boastful tag line: "The best there is", the mission of the campaign is multi-fold:

  • To get occasional anglers on the water
  • To introduce new anglers to the lure of the open water and the great Canadian tradition of fishing
  • To educate the public on regulations, resource management and sustainability initiatives to ensure the long-term protection of B.C.'s fishing habitats
  • To emphasize the ease of buying a fishing licence online through e-licensing and inform the public on programs funded through the monies raised via the sale of fishing licences
  • To highlight the myriad range of fishing experiences available within the province
  • To detail events, accommodations, fishing locals and "learn to fish" programs
  • To keep frequent anglers up-to-date on what's happening in the province and the resources available to them
  • Fishing in the City and Family Fishing information

"We are hoping to rekindle the joys of fishing with all anglers, but especially with people who are learning to fish or want to do it more often," says Don Peterson, President, Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. "Our message is that not only is fishing sustainable across B.C., it is accessible, and a wonderful way to reconnect with friends, family and the great outdoors. It's simply the best there is."
