110,000 Reasons to Get Excited about Fishing in Chilliwack

The Freshwater Fisheries Society (FFSBC), in cooperation with Federal Fisheries staff at Chilliwack River Hatchery will be conducting their annual stocking of the Chilliwack River this week.

The FFSBC will be transporting over 110,000 steelhead smolts, which average 90 grams, from the Slesse Creek site to several release sites in the lower sections of the Chilliwack River. These fish, once released, will migrate out to the ocean and hopefully return in two or three years to provide thousands of hours of recreational angling enjoyment for many avid steelhead anglers.

The Chilliwack River steelhead fishery supports up to 50,000 angler-days each year and is dependant on this fish release program. “The fish may be small, but they will bolster local steelhead stocks and support this great fishery in the coming years.” said Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery Manager, Dale Larson.
