Top 11 Urban Fishing Cities in North America
North America is undergoing an urban fishing revival. In the United States, the Clean Water Act of 1972 kicked off a nationwide clean-up of city waters created many challenging urban fisheries from New York to Vancouver.
Region 1: Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is blessed with a mild climate, which allows exceptional year-round freshwater angling opportunities. Sport fish abound in many of the over 2,000 picturesque lakes scattered across the Island.
Since most Island streams and rivers flow into the ocean, it's easy to walk-and-wade along the river banks, or take a drift-boat trip to fish for sea-run cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden that mingle with resident rainbow trout and, in some streams, exotic brown trout. These same streams hold salmon throughout the late summer and fall, and prized steelhead trout all winter and spring.
Vancouver Island offers many other activities that complement a fishing adventure. Almost every community offers eco-touring adventures, you can hike the rugged and challenging West Coast Trail, play a round on a world-class golf course, ski mountains with some of province's greatest snow bases, explore the depths of a cave system, or surf the open Pacific Ocean. There are all kinds of other things to entice the whole family, including theatres, galleries and museums, restaurants and cafés, wineries and farm markets, great shopping and world-class spas!
