Region 1: Vancouver Island > Occasional Angler Spots
Colliery Dam
Description: Located within a regional park in the city of Nanaimo, Colliery Dam proves that you don't need to go too far from the city to find great fishing. In addition to great rainbow trout fishing, there are terrific hiking trails, swimming beaches and scenic views.
Nearest town/city: Nanaimo
Driving directions: Located at the junction of Highway 19 and Nanaimo Lakes Road.

Elk and Beaver Lakes
Description: Within Elk/Beaver Regional Park, these lakes are popular recreation spots for families. Visit www.crd.bc.ca/parks for details.
Nearest town/city: Victoria
Driving directions: Located 12 km north of Victoria along Highway 17; both Beaver and Elk Lakes are accessible by BC Transit buses.
Facilities: There are two boat launches on Elk Lake. There is also a fishing pier oat the northwest end that is wheelchair-accessible.
Fish in the lake: Elk Lake is stocked with cutthroat trout fry and catchable rainbow trout; you can also catch a variety of other species including perch and bass.
Tips/Techniques:
Spider Lake
Description: The warm water of Spider Lake is noted for its excellent canoeing, kayaking, swimming and year-round fishing opportunities. This provincial park is an idyllic spot for a quiet family outing.
Nearest town/city: Qualicum
Driving directions: The lake and provincial park can be accessed via the Horne Lake exit off Highway #19 or Highway #19a. Follow signs for 5 km to Spider Lake.
Facilities: Small car-top boats, canoes and kayaks may be launched from the beach next to a small parking lot located within the provincial park, or boats may also be launched from a steep-banked causeway outside of the park. Fish in the lake: stocked with catchable-sized rainbow trout; smallmouth bass are also present.
