The Kootenay Trout Hatchery is offering Learn to Fish programs this summer and is encouraging aspiring anglers of all ages to make 2009 the year that they discover the joys of fishing.

Rice Lake
Description: Rice Lake is a short walk from the entrance to the Seymour Demonstration Forest at the north end of Lillooet Road; it is an excellent family fishing opportunity close to the city. A fishing dock, which is located in the southeast corner of the lake and was specially designed to give disabled anglers easy access and to provide children with the opportunity to catch their first trout! In the Demonstration Forest you may also find fishing opportunities in the Seymour River, with access via the Fisherman's Trail, along with numerous trails for hiking and mountain biking.
Nearest town/city: North Vancouver
Driving directions: Take exit #22A from Highway 1, turn left at the intersection onto Lillooet Rd and follow to the parking area. Walk the short trail to the lake. For wheelchair access, see the gate operator.
Facilities: Pier, pit-toilets, day use picnic area, walking and hiking trails, wheelchair accessible
Fish in the lake: Stocked catchable-sized rainbow trout
Tip: Good shore and pier fishing; best fishing spring and fall.


Browning Lake

Description: This small lake is located within Murrin Provincial Park. There is an easy walking trail that goes around the lake and there is excellent rock climbing on several of the cliffs. The lake has a sandy beach for swimming and launching a canoe or kayak.
Nearest town/city: South of Squamish
Driving directions: Located in Murrin Provincial Park 2 kilometres north of Britannia Beach and 9 kilometres south of Squamish alongside Highway 99.

Fish in the lake: Stocked rainbow trout
Tips: Good shore and bellyboat fishing.
Fish during spring and fall to avoid the summer crowds.


Mike Lake

Description: Mike Lake is located in Golden Ears Provincial Park. For more information on Golden Ears Provincial Park visit www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks
Nearest town/city: North of Maple Ridge
Driving directions: From Maple Ridge, drive down Dewdney Trunk Rd, turn north on 232 Street, right on Fern Crescent and follow the road into the park. Turn left onto the gravel Mike Lake Rd.
Facilities: Parking, wharf and hiking trails. More extensive facilities are available in other areas of the park.
Fish in the lake: Stocked rainbow trout and wild cutthroat trout
Tip: Fish from the wharf or a small boat.
