Roche, Bulman, Horseshoe, Ernest and Black Lakes
Description: Head to Roche Lake Provincial Park to fish in five world-class trout fishing lakes.
Nearest town/city: Kamloops, Quilchena and Merritt
Driving directions: Roche Lake Provincial Park is accessed via gravel road from Highway 5A at the north end of Trapp Lake, 36 km southeast of Kamloops. For Ernest and Bulman lakes a 4WD is needed.
Facilities: Roche and Horseshoe Lakes offer rustic camping facilities complete with boat launches suitable for small trailered boats. Canoes, float tubes and car-top boats are also great options for fishing the park's lakes. For more information on Roche Lake Provincial Park, visit: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/
Fish in the lake: These lakes are stocked annually with rainbow and/or brook trout and each lake provides a different fishing experience.
Tips/Techniques:
Face Lake (also known as Mile High Lake)
Description: This is one of the region's best bets for hot summer fishing. Sitting at about 4,700 feet above sea level, Face Lake is not quite a true mile high, but the high altitude ensures water temperatures are cool throughout the season.
Nearest town/city: Kamloops
Driving directions: From Kamloops, drive west on the Trans-Canada Highway to the Coquihalla Highway and Exit 336, the road to Logan Lake. Go 8 km west along the highway to Logan Lake before turning north onto Paska Lake Road, which is well signed. As you continue down this road for 10.2 km, you will pass Paska Lake before reaching the south end of Face Lake. The road to the Face Lake recreation site, which is rough and may require four-wheel-drive, is another 2.3 km.
Facilities: At the south end of Face Lake is a lodge and a small recreation site. A rough boat launch can be found along the northwest shore.
Fish in the lake: Large population of rainbow trout, however, the high numbers of fish mean they seldom grow big. Expect plenty of trout in the 0.5 kilogram (one pound) range with the occasional fish reaching 1 kg (2 lbs).
Tips: This is one of the best lakes for fly-fishers to test new patterns.
Trollers find success with the usual methods and hardware; experiment with combinations of lures, trolling speed and depth.
Paska Lake
Description: This lake is typical of many in the Kamloops area: small, angler-friendly and productive. This is a great family fishing lake!
Nearest town/city: Kamloops
Driving directions: From Kamloops, follow Highway 5 south to Exit 336 and head west for roughly eight kilometres to Paska Lake Road.
Facilities: A large recreation site has a rough boat launch for cartoppers and small trailered craft, and space for 50 campsites.
Fish in the lake: Rainbow trout grow to about 1.0 kg (2 lbs), feeding on the abundant freshwater shrimp, caddis flies and dragonfly nymphs.
