Fishing and Camping are a Great Pairing
BC’s lakes are in the midst of undergoing fish stocking, which means more freshwater fish than you can shake a stick (or rod) at this summer. As you dust off musty camping gear and prepare to hit the road, make sure your rods and reels are along for the trip.
Region 4: Kootenay
In the Kootenay region, rugged mountains tower all around you. Barren snow-fringed peaks plummet toward lush alpine meadows, which in turn are absorbed into dense sub-alpine forests.
This region is renowned for its dry fly-fishing for westslope cutthroat trout that draws anglers from around the world to the region's smaller rivers and streams. You can fly-fish for these golden-hued beauties from shore, or from a drift-boat while floating down a wild, free-flowing stream through some of the world's most stunning scenery. The fishing doesn't end with the summer, either - there is plenty of family-friendly ice fishing during the winter months.
The region's abundant big game will have you scouring steep, shale slopes for a glimpse of mountain goat or bighorn sheep. Look for herds of elk grazing in meadows at the edge of the forest. And always be bear-aware - this is prime grizzly country.
