Region 6: Skeena
Highway 16 (the Yellowhead Highway) follows the Skeena River from Prince Rupert, on the coast, into the heartland of the province. The highway provides access to year-round fishing in hundreds of northern lakes, as well as to the world-renowned trophy salmon and steelhead fishery of the Skeena River and its major tributaries.
Many lakes accessible from Highway 16 afford ample opportunities for the beginning and occasional angler to catch fish. Expert fishers can also avail themselves of harder-to-reach lakes that are specifically managed for well-equipped, advanced anglers. And don't forget, there's fabulous ice-fishing for all species throughout the winter.
Be sure to visit the region's fascinating aboriginal cultural centre, see the world's largest fly rod, go kayaking or canoeing, take in some challenging rock climbing, or charter a float plane for some unforgettable sightseeing. And have your camera ready - this is spectacular big game country with abundant deer, moose, caribou, mountain goats and sheep, grizzly and black bears.
