Region 7a: Omineca
The northern Rocky Mountain Trench, lying between the rugged Omineca Mountains on the west and the towering Northern Rockies to the east, forms the basis of the Omineca-Peace River region.
Fish are abundant and grow big in the Omineca-Peace River region. There is fabulous year-round fishing, with some of the best access to better fishing spots coming when lakes freeze over. Best of all, you can often catch most species in both the rivers and lakes - right from shore - making this region an ideal place for beginning anglers to experience the thrill of catching their first fish.
The Omineca-Peace River region is true big game country. Keep an eye out for moose, deer, caribou, black bear, and grizzly bear. Use binoculars to scan the lofty peaks and steep slopes for Dall's sheep, Stone's sheep, or mountain goats.
After a long day of driving, hiking, sightseeing, wildlife viewing, and fishing in this immense and incredibly beautiful region, go for a soothing soak in the Liard River Hot Springs.
